About Steve Bridger and Sundog Sharpening

For 29 years I earned my living as a City Letter Carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. You may ask why the name "Sundog." When I was a kid I would see sun dogs in the sky, and I wanted to know what these auras on either side of the sun were. My dad explained to me what those bright spots on either side of the sun were, and then the old wives tale says that when you see one, the weather will change within 48 hours.

So, for me, a sundog signifies a change in my own life. As I got closer to retiring from the Postal Service, I wanted to find something to supplement my income, and that would give me more flexibility for spending time with my family and friends.

When sharpening my own knives, I realized that everyone’s knives get dull, and only a small percentage of people have the tools and skills to put a good edge on their knives, scissors and garden tools. I started out sharpening family and friends’ knives and scissors. Over the next several months, through research and practice, I have refined my skills and purchased the right equipment to do the job right the first time.

In the spring of 2016, I decided to jump in with both feet. I contacted and began renting space several times a month at the Kansas City, City Market. Doing this gave me some great exposure, and I saw that sharpening knives, scissors and garden tools was only scratching the surface of the things I could sharpen as a service to my customers.

In October of 2018, I traveled to Minnesota and took advanced courses in sharpening at the American Sharpening Institute and now have certifications in sharpening both bevel and convex edge shears, and also sharpening and repairing clipper blades.

I look forward to focusing on stylists and groomers both locally as well as around the country via mail order and guarantee 100% customer satisfaction in my work.

After spending my entire life in a customer service role with the post office, my goal for Sundog is, to provide my customers with the high level of quality, at a reasonable price, with the type of service that you deserve!

I would love to “sharpen” for you too!
